Hyaluronic Acid and the Skin

It is our goal at Body Joy Beauty to use safe and natural ingredients in all of our skin care formulations. Many scientific advances in skin care today are based on botanical or nutritional ingredients. Hyaluronic Acid is one of these.

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Also known as Sodium Hyaluronate, Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is the king of hydrators. It is not an acid but a natural complex sugar produced naturally by the body in the connective tissue, eyes and skin, but most abundantly in the skin. Originally it was extracted from rooster combs, but now it is mainly lab produced by the blo-fermentation of vegetable derived proteins and carbohydrates. In our skin HA acts like a sponge and soaks up a whopping 1000 times its own weight in water. It has the ability to supply the skin with supreme moisture because it latches onto water molecules and integrates them into the skin, leaving your skin well hydrated and rejuvenated. As a water-gelling molecule it cushions and lubricates in connective tissue, and when used as a topical serum, it can help maintain skin elasticity.

HA provides continuous moisture to the skin. This plumpness and high moisture level is very evident in babies and young children. It's a major component of the connective tissue matrix in the dermis—the dense, inner layer of skin beneath the epidermis. This matrix is made up of hyaluronic acid as well as two connective fibers-collagen and elastin.

With age, the ability of the skin to produce Hyaluronic Acid gradually decreases as a result of exposure to environmental pollutants and the sun's ultraviolet rays. Your skin tissue becomes dehydrated and the collagen and elastin fibers lose their structure, resulting in a loss of skin volume, leaving it wrinkled and sagging, common characteristic of aged skin.

Not only does it help to plump up your skin, but it also bolsters the skin's natural ability to make collagen. So it's a one-two punch. However you need to be sure you choose a hyaluronic acid skin care product that uses it as a main ingredient. This is one of the few ingredients that has scientifically demonstrated itself as being effective.

Hyaluronic Acid can be injected directly into the skin by a dermatologist for the most immediate results. However, the injection of HA can cause symptoms such as swelling, infection, tenderness, acne, lumps, and hardening of the skin tissue. It is much safer used in a serum as it rarely causes sensitivity when applied topically.

Applying HA topically in a serum helps to attract and maintain water within the extracellular space, hydrating your skin and increasing its volume and density. Much of the moisture loss can be replenished, revitalizing ageing skin.

100% Pure Hyaluronic Acid has unique properties that make it the ideal moisturizer for hydrating the skin, as it is able to hold 70% more water than any other natural substance. Its unmatched hydrating properties result in increased smoothness, softening and decreased wrinkles.
Hyaluronic Acid can be used following laser surgery and chemical peels to protect, hydrate and regenerate the skin, while reducing dryness, itching and burning of the skin. It offers an excellent environment for the growth of new cells and healing following skin peeling. It is also believed to reduce the appearance of rosacea and dark circles under the eyes.

It is well documented that decreasing Hyaluronic Acid content correlates with aging and wrinkling. Therefore practical attempts to prolong and recapture youth by revitalizing damaged tissue should include this molecule.

Body Joy's 100% Pure Hyaluronic Acid Moisturizer contains only pure, concentrated Hyaluronic Acid and purified water and is excellent for everyday use as a moisturizer or under other skin care products.
